1 arrested, 1 on the run after attempted ATM theft in Gig Harbor, WA
GIG HARBOR, Wash. - Gig Harbor arrested one of two suspects Friday morning for attempting to steal an ATM with a rental truck.
According to police, two men were captured on surveillance video pulling up to an ATM at the Olympic Towne Center early in the morning. Security alerted police, and an officer was already patrolling nearby and "arrived almost immediately," authorities say.
The officer confronted the two suspects, who were attaching a chain from their rental truck to the ATM.
They both ran, so police set up a perimeter with Pierce County and Kitsap County deputies. A K9 unit was brought in and tracked a suspect across SR-16, where he was found hiding in the bushes near the Olympic Village.
Police arrested the 57-year-old man, but were unable to find the second suspect.
According to authorities, there was approximately $60,000 in damages done to the ATM and bank building, and police suspect the rental truck was stolen.
The 57-year-old will be booked into Pierce County Jail for felony charges of attempted theft and malicious mischief. Once the truck ownership is identified, there may be additional charges.
