FOX 13 Seattle Internships
FOX 13 Seattle is proud to support a culture of creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and community that attracts the industry’s brightest talent. Our Academic Internship Program offers motivated college students who are passionate about entertainment and the media industry the opportunity to gain real-world work experience with guidance from top industry professionals.
FOX 13 Seattle’s academic interns are assigned to a department that matches their skill set, work experience, and career aspirations. Interns will receive academic credit and firsthand training with experienced professionals in various fields of broadcasting
Academic interns will rotate weekly for approximately (8) to twelve (12) weeks in workgroups to learn from trained professionals.
Assignment Desk: Students will shadow the "nerve center" of the newsroom to understand how local news develops, is assigned, and researched. Students will watch how assignment editors perform various duties, including online research, phone calls, review of police scanners, and management of traffic cameras. Interns will also observe how assignment editors organize information from a variety of sources (news releases, social media posts, scanner traffic, etc.) so it is accurate and easily accessible for staff.
Reporters & Photographers: Students will gain hands-on experience in the daily work of journalists who are dispatched to work in the field. This will give students a broad understanding of story development, on-scene interviewing, shooting video, covering newsworthy events, meeting deadlines, and live shot transmission work. Interns will also learn how life in the "field" compares with work done simultaneously in the newsroom.
Digital Team: Students will shadow the digital team and learn how they create, edit, and produce content for FOX 13’s digital properties, including the website fox13seattle.com, the FOX LOCAL live stream, and the station’s social media properties. Interns will shadow digital producers in all areas of gathering news content, including researching and writing news stories, encoding video, and editing photos.
Producer Row: Rome wasn’t built in a day, but every newscast is. Interns will learn how the rundown is produced each day for each newscast. They will shadow trained producers and writers who sit in "producer row" to see how stories are written, and how soundbytes are selected for air. Students will also learn about the visual side of the TV medium – why video is selected for many stories, but graphics are built for others. Interns will also gain an understanding about rundown strategy: what constitutes the "lead" story, and why do other stories air at :10 past the hour or :48 past the hour?
Newscast Production: Students shadowing in production will gain an understanding about the "live" element of local newscasts. This rotation shows interns how control rooms and studio operations work. Interns will shadow directors, production technicians and engineers to understand the technology needed to bring all the "ingredients" together to execute a newscast: video, graphics, the TelePrompTer, audio, live shots, studio cameras, and much more.
On-Air Talent: Students will shadow studio-based news and weather anchors on various tasks. When shadowing the news anchors, interns will learn about the newsgathering process in the newsroom and how to prepare for a live newscast. They will also observe various tasks, including story research, copyediting, phone calls and writing, to ensure total accuracy before airtime. Students will shadow weather anchors and learn how they collect weather data and build computer forecast graphics. Interns will also observe how weather anchors post weather maps, correspond with the National Weather Service (NWS) for data, maps, and forecasts, and research historical weather facts.
FOX 13 Sports Team: Students will spend a rotation with anchors, producers, photographers, and editors on the FOX 13 Seattle sports team. Interns will learn what it takes to cover seven professional teams in Seattle, plus college programs and minor league organizations. There may be rare opportunities to shadow a game in person, but this is not guaranteed.
Good Day Seattle: Students will take everything they have learned from the individual workgroups, and spend one week learning how those practices are collectively used on the station’s marquee morning program "Good Day Seattle." Students will shadow the early morning hours with producers, directors, anchors, reporters, photographers, and other staff to see how the morning show is a 24/7 endeavor. There may be an opportunity to shadow a "Good Day Seattle Zip Trip," but this is not guaranteed.
