What are the chances of a February snow storm in Seattle? Here's what we know

This could end up being one of the longest dry spells in January on record at Sea-Tac Airport.

By the numbers:

Monday, Jan. 27 marks eleven consecutive dry days. The longest stretch of dry weather in January was back in 1963 with 15 consecutive days. However, we're finally forecasting the return of wet weather: get ready for the "rain train" beginning Friday.

What's next:

Temperatures will remain frigid over the next several days. Carve out extra time to scrape the windshield before work.

There may be patchy freezing fog the next few mornings, especially for the typical areas in the South Sound and other fog-prone valleys. The sunshine will be spectacular through Wednesday, so enjoy.

Cloudier skies will follow on Thursday with lowland rain and mountain snow returning on Friday. What’s good for the ski resorts is bad for pass travelers: driving over the mountains could be difficult at times this weekend.

Dig deeper:

You’ll notice on Seattle’s seven-day forecast that we have a combination of cool temperatures this weekend. Some data is hinting at "chunky rain" – aka, a rain/snow mix – this weekend or early next workweek in the lowlands of western Washington.

The best chance for this looks to be Saturday or Sunday nights along and north of Snohomish County. This looks like a minor event at this point with few to no impacts.

Perhaps some of the higher hills at and above elevations of 500 feet could see a brief, light coating of snow on the ground here and there. But truthfully, it’s too early to determine the timing, totals and impacts of any rain/snow mix in the lower elevations for next weekend.

The forecast models are disagreeing about what to expect. This serves as a reminder to stay with FOX 13 Seattle this week, and get the free FOX LOCAL app for the latest severe weather alerts.
