Hiker hospitalized after 100-foot fall at WA's Lake Serene
INDEX, Wash. - A man was hospitalized after falling 100 feet while hiking, hitting several rocks on the way down, and landing in a partially frozen lake on Sunday.
According to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, a solo male hiker fell down a cliff on the north end of Lake Serene, near Index, Washington.
After the 100-foot fall, the hiker was unable to get himself out of the lake, as he was suffering from hypothermia, a suspected head injury, broken ribs and a possible hip fracture.
The hiker activated a personal locator beacon to request help.
Multiple search and rescue teams and a helicopter were deployed. The helicopter was initially delayed due to poor weather.
Eventually, the Naval Base Whidbey rescue helicopter was able to hoist the hiker and fly him to Harborview Medical Center. His current status is unknown.
The rescue concluded at around 1:45 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
