RENTON, Wash. - A 35-year-old Renton man is behind bars, accused of shooting at police officers during a SWAT standoff on Saturday.
According to investigators, the man fired shots from inside a home. That turned into a barricade situation involving multiple police agencies and SWAT.
It all started around 11 a.m. when police responded to calls of gunfire inside a home near 2600 Northeast 5th Court in Renton.
What they're saying:
"I was sitting in my room listening to music," said Samuel. "All of a sudden, just a loud bang, glass everywhere. I took off the headset and ran out the house."
The 23-year-old told FOX 13 he realized his house had been shot at. He said the bullet came from a home diagonal from his, one block away.
"I ran to a neighbor’s house, and they called 911," he said.
The backstory:
When the police arrived, they tried to make contact, but the suspect barricaded himself inside the house. Because he was armed with a gun, Renton Police requested Valley SWAT to help with the arrest.
"They then started to do what we call public announcements to have people exit the house so that they could do their investigation safely," said Commander Susan Hassinger. with the Renton Police Department. "They couldn’t go in the house. We didn’t have a search warrant at that point."
Around 3 p.m., the man reportedly fired four shots at police. No one was hit.
"We did not return fire," said Hassinger.
The man eventually surrendered and was taken to jail on suspicion of first-degree assault.
Renton PD secured the scene and is currently collecting evidence. The investigation is expected to last several hours.
As for the initial shooting, police said that will be part of a secondary investigation.
"I still don’t know why he shot at or towards me," said Samuel. "I’m still a little bit anxious, just trying to work it all through."
