Mason County man calls 911, says he accidentally shot wife while cleaning gun

SHELTON, Wash. — A 68-year-old Mason County man called 911 and said he accidentally shot  his wife while cleaning his gun in the kitchen Monday.

The Mason County Sheriff's Office said deputies found the man performing CPR on his wounded wife. Deputies took over the CPR, but the man's 67-year-old wife died.

She was later identified as Jean Crandell.

A sheriff's spokesman said the husband reported his wife was making dinner while he was cleaning his gun. The gun went off, with the bullet striking her in the chest.

The sheriff's office says the man called about 5 p.m. Monday.


Neither the man nor woman was immediately identified. Their home is in a rural area southeast of Shelton.

The sheriff's office said an investigation is under way.
