High costs in Washington

The study calculated living wage requirements based on the 50/30/20 budgeting rule, which allocates 50% of income to necessities, 30% to discretionary spending and 20% to savings. Key costs for Washington families:

  • Housing: $27,807 annually
  • Groceries: $11,845 annually
  • Healthcare: $8,977 annually

These expenses contribute to Washington’s position as the 10th most expensive state for families in the U.S.

Comparing Washington to the rest of US

Nationally, living wages vary significantly. West Virginia ranks as the most affordable state, requiring $82,338 annually for a family of four. On the other end of the spectrum, Hawaii families need $258,918, the highest in the nation.

In neighboring Oregon, the living wage is slightly higher than Washington, at $131,824 annually, while Idaho families need $107,412.

The challenge for Washington families

Washington families face unique challenges, including housing costs that have surged in recent years

While the state boasts a strong economy and abundant job opportunities, the rising cost of living has made it increasingly difficult for middle-income families to cover basic expenses, save for the future, and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
