Haggen agrees to sell 29 core stores to Albertsons, will close 2 stores in Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Haggen grocery chain announced Friday it has accepted an offer from Albertsons for 29 of its core stores. It said it also plans to close two Washington stores -- in Port Angeles and Puyallup -- and one store in Oregon City, Ore.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court must approve the sale. A hearing is set for March 29.

The sale price has not been disclosed.

According to a Haggen news release, cited by multiple media organizations, the sale involves 22 Washington stores and seven in Oregon. Not included in the sale are the stores in Port Angeles and Puyallup and in Oregon City, Ore.

The Bellingham Herald reported that, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications for Washington, the Puyallup store has 78 employees while the Port Angeles store has 67 employees. They will be laid off, and the stores are expected to close within 60 days.
