Gig Harbor, WA police warn of purse thefts targeting elderly women

Police in Gig Harbor are warning the public about a recent uptick of purse snatchings targeting elderly women.

According to the Gig Harbor Police Department (GHPD), there have been three incidents in the last three days. Each purse snatching was carried out in a similar fashion; they all occurred in parking lots at three separate stores, and the victims in each case were elderly women who were either carrying their purses or had them sitting in their grocery carts.

Authorities say the suspects approached the women, stole their purses and fled in vehicles.

One elderly woman fell to the ground and suffered significant injuries to her face.

The GHPD says detectives are actively working on these cases, and it is unknown if each case involves the same suspects.

Police are now urging everyone to keep their personal belongings close and to not leave anything unattended in cars or open vehicle trunks.

"Be aware of your surroundings and people or vehicles that may approach you in public places," the GHPD wrote on Facebook. "Prioritize your personal safety over that of your possessions."
