Shots fired at Pierce County Transit bus
Puyallup police are investigating after several shots were fired at a Pierce County Transit bus.
PUYALLUP, Wash. - Investigators with the Puyallup Police Department are searching for two suspects, believed to be minors, who they say fired gunshots at a bus in downtown Puyallup on Sunday evening.
According to police, the bus was struck by multiple gunshots after three people were involved in an altercation while exiting the Pierce Transit vehicle. No injuries were reported.
"There’s multiple gunshots in the windows of the bus," said Puyallup Police Chief Scott Engle. "There’s also at least one gunshot within the motor area of the bus. There’s also also another gunshot in the sidewall of the bus."
Officers responded to the 300 block of South Meridian around 4:42 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire targeting a Pierce Transit bus, police said. Witnesses reported that two individuals exited a bus stop and shot at someone aboard the bus.
The Pierce Transit driver followed agency policy and drove the bus to safety, police said.
"Based on witness descriptions," said Chief Engle, "we believe they are under the age of 18."
The suspects fled the area on foot. Officers from the Puyallup Police Department, assisted by nearby agencies, set up a perimeter and began searching for them, but no arrests had been reported as of 8 p.m.
The department’s Investigative Services Unit is handling the case. Detectives said the investigation is ongoing and are asking for the public’s help.
"We will likely have very good video footage to work with," said Chief Engle. " I feel very confident that our detectives will be able to work this case and find who is responsible for what happened tonight."
The shooting comes amid heightened safety concerns on public transit following the stabbing murder of a Seattle Metro bus driver earlier this week.
