PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. - In a heartfelt farewell, Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer conducted his final swearing-in ceremony today, welcoming a new class of deputies and corrections deputies to the department. The ceremony was attended by family members who proudly pinned new badges on their loved ones, marking a significant milestone in their law enforcement careers.
Sheriff Troyer promoted two sergeants to the rank of lieutenant, including Darren Moss, who previously served as the department's public information officer. The newly sworn-in deputies will soon embark on their next journey at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center, where they will undergo 720 hours of rigorous training.
Sheriff Troyer, who decided not to run for re-election, expressed pride in leaving the department well-prepared and nearly fully staffed. As his term comes to an end on New Year's Eve, he reflected on his tenure, citing the largest pay increase for deputies in the department's history as one of his proudest achievements.
Looking ahead, Troyer shared his plans for the future during the event.
"A lot of people know I love doing volunteer, charity work, foundation work, and I think what I am going to do is take a breath and continue to do those things, settle and see what's next," he said. "But I'm not done. I'm just done after 40 years with this job."
The ceremony also included a special recognition, as Troyer swore in Pierce County Executive Bruce Dammeier and FOX 13's David Rose as honorary deputy sheriffs.
In a ceremonial statement, Sheriff Troyer acknowledged Rose's commitment: "Mr. Rose is hereby recognized as an honorary deputy sheriff in appreciation of his relentless pursuit of justice for victims and for his tireless efforts to ensure that suspects are held accountable for crimes committed against the communities we proudly serve. His exceptional support of law enforcement has displayed the Sheriff's Department's Core Values of Courage, Compassion, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility."
As the day concluded, the atmosphere was filled with a mix of celebration and nostalgia, marking the end of an era for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department under Troyer's leadership.
