Man arrested for smuggling thousands of MDMA doses from Canada to US

A man has been taken into police custody in Whatcom County after international authorities say he smuggled thousands of doses of MDMA over the U.S.-Canada border.

Bellingham border control agents followed up on reports of a man smuggling drugs into the country after receiving tips that he had crossed the international boundary on the north end of Ross Lake.

On December 27, Homeland Security and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police initially followed up on reports of a stolen canoe just north of the U.S. He was later found by authorities walking on Highway 20.

Canoe reported stolen and property found for MDMA arrest

The following items were found in the man's property, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office:

  • Cell phone
  • Scale
  • Empty pill capsules
  • Almost 1.5 pounds of a purple crystallized substance that tested positive for the presumptive presence of MDMA

The sheriff's office explained that with an average dose between 50-150 milligrams, there would have been enough MDMA for 4,300-12,900 doses.

MDMA is a synthetic, psychoactive drug commonly referred to as Molly or Ecstasy.
