ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says two teenage boys from Roseburg drowned in the South Umpqua River after being dared to swim across.
The boys — 16-year-old Dustin Conopa and 17-year-old Froylan Carrion-Estrada — were among a group of teens who were daring each other to swim across Saturday evening.
One of the boys became distressed, and a second went back to try to help him.
The sheriff's office says that when the second boy reached the first, both went under and didn't resurface.
Rescuers searched until dark and resumed looking for them Sunday morning.
A little before 11 a.m., the sheriff's office dive team found their bodies just a few inches apart, in 20-feet of water at the spot where they went under.
